Costume Gallery, Helston Museum

Curator Janet Spargo with a 1920s Flapper Dress

FDFAS Heritage Volunteers worked at the Helston Folk Museum from October 2003 until 2013. During that period the Museum had a Costume Gallery where some costumes were displayed in addition to a large number of items in store. These items varied from Victorian dresses to W.W.II uniforms. At Helston we were involved in the recording and conservation of costume.

Some of the work undertaken included packing in acid free paper and boxes or hung in special bags made of Tyvek.

Map of Heslton Museum Costumes worked on covered these periods and classification:

  • Victorian
  • 20s & 30s
  • 40s & 50s
  • 60s & 70s
  • and uniforms

In May 2012 the group visited the costume collection at Killerton, the National Trust Property near Exeter.  The volunteers were shown around the costume storage area and the way to pack and store costume to the latest museum standards. All work was undertaken by trained volunteers.
